The wait is over. Upon contact with the German Death metal combo DISINFECT, I immediately felt the need to have them featured in the webpages of The Grave. Guitarist Christian has kindly answered our enquiry. In the meantime, there is a new drummer (Hannes) and a new bassist (Klaus).

BTTG – Hallo Christian. How are you?

Christian – Hi Morgana, thanks I’m fine! Hope you too.

BTTG – Would you please introduce DISINFECT to the readers of Back to the Grave?

Christian – The beginning of the band was 1999. We’re a brutal Death Metal band from Germany, influenced in our playing by the American style.

BTTG – The band got almost immediate label response after being founded. From early 1999 to late 2000 you certainly managed to draw attention. What do you hold of the cooperation with your first label (Rest in Hell)? Why signing to Diamond Productions for the follow-up to Beinspender?

Christian – Yes, we changed some labels! First Rest in Peace, after that we released our CD Beinspender under Rest In Hell and now we signed to the French label Diamond Prod. We were very disapointed with the work of RiH: they did nothing except manufacturing the CD and the normal thing to do is to change to a better label if you can.

BTTG – Your lyrics attempt at portraying socio-critical thoughts as well as provocative personal views on various subjects. Do you think there should be an interventive edge to Death Metal? Do you think Death Metal is conceptually homogenous?

Christian – No, there are so many different styles in Death Metal. Old school, technical, fast, slow, melodic, influenced by Thrash, Grind or Black Metal………..I think DM is a varied music style!

BTTG – Your lyrics are not exclusively written in English – there is this German song (apparently) with German lyrics in Beinspender. Are you into bilingualism or was this pure chance (Zufall) that made things the way they are? Would you like to explore German lyrics in the future?

Christian – Haha, no, it was pure chance. Nothing more, nothing else. Maybe we’ll do it again?!? We’ll see if the lyrics fit into the song…….

BTTG – In previous interviews you have mentioned having started listening to metal at a very young age. Does that mean you still prefer vinyl over CD? Why (not)?

Christian – Yes, I was fuckin’ young, about 4-5 years old. Listening to music like AC/DC, KISS, SAXON, MOTÖRHEAD…. my cousins made me the shit I’m now, haha.

No, I prefer CD, it’s easy to put 6 CD’s in your CD player and sit down and drink some beers. But as an artist I prefer vinyl, because you can see much more on a big vinyl cover.

BTTG – What made you start playing music? Which bands influenced your decision (directly or indirectly) and why did you choose the guitar? In which devious ways does music help you express your ‘artistic’ ambitions? Why DM in particular?

Christian – If you’re listening to all these rock stars, then you wanna become one too! Haha! It was the love of Metal, particularly the extreme one. Therefore you should take an instrument or your voice and try the best. As a young guy, I always wanted a drum kit, but it was not possible in my parents’ flat – and guitar is fuckin’ cool too. Death Metal was the best way to express my feelings and I like this kind of extreme music!

BTTG – You have had bands prior to DISINFECT. How far did they go? How much did you think you have learned in the process? Did you always play DM?

Christian – I had some popular bands and some not so popular bands… it was different but it always had something to do with Death Metal. One of the bands was something between Death and Black. The others were pure Death Metal. The band before DISINFECT was OBSCURE and it was more technical DM in the way of old MORBID ANGEL.

BTTG – You seem to have a number of side projects / activities within music. Could you go into further detail? You have told me about the DEPTH OF WINTER Festival. What philosophy underlies this event?

Christian – No, there are no side projects. The festival is a benefit one; last time, the money was donated for kids suffering from cancer. It’s a Death, Grind and Black Metal festival! www.depth-of-winter.de.vu

BTTG – In the past, you cancelled a number of concerts because of some lousy conditions for the band/ on stage, etc. Actually, I though that kind of things only happened in Portugal, ha. What are DISINFECT’s minimum requirements to perform a concert? What do you think of the general organisation of concerts in Germany and other countries you have played in? What role are the bands given?

Christian – We need some money drinks, food and a sleeping place. The money depends on where we should play… Must say the organizations are good in most countries we played in and there’re always good and bad organizers. We haven’t really had bad experiences till now.

BTTG – You have played with some major acts in the past. Which concerts stuck the stronger to your memory and why? Which bands would you like to play/ tour with?

Christian – The SINISTER tour was fuckin’ cool and funny – especially because of bands like my good friends in APOPHIS!! There’re some favourites: CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL, DEEDS OF FLESH, DISGORGE (USA), NILE……and many more haha

BTTG – As an insider in the German UG scene, what image do you have of the metal scene in general (and that goes from Underground to Mainstream)? I have always had this feeling most Germans are into Power/Thrash/Heavy – and don’t gainsay me, I have seen it! Which bands do you recommend?

Christian – I’m not too much in this scene. There’re too many kiddies, especially the Black Metal ones. Looking always evil, but having short hair and after the gig they’ve got to remove the make-up and go to the kindergarten. Haha, I’m doing it my way: having good friends, party and it’s not important what they hear. In our area [Ulm – M] there’s a big DM, BM scene!!

BTTG – What about the Portuguese metal scene? What do you make of it?

Christian – Sorry, but I don’t know the scene in Portugal, maybe we should play there once! The only band I know is MOONSPELL and I don’t like the music….

BTTG – You already have two albums on the way. How different were the studio sessions for each album? Did you use the same studio and producer for both?

Christian – One CD is a live one. We´ll go this year again in the studio. But maybe we´ll change this time… And we’ll go to Sweden… we’ll see.

BTTG – One of the songs in your debut Beinspender (Bone donor) is titled Grave New World. What is the concept behind it? Is it anyhow related to Aldous Huxley's Brave New World? Please elaborate on this.

Christian – It’s maybe something like…playing with words. It’s about our society and that the only god is money. Most people don’t respect each other and shit like that.

BTTG – Your interest in war and warfare is quite evident. Man has it in the blood – the will to kill and corrupt. Why do you focus so much on this subject?

Christian – Yes, I’m reading a lot about WWII. You said it: Man has it in the blood – the will to kill and corrupt haha It’s something normal, you can see it every day on TV.  Secondly, every band has an "image" and ours is war. There are so many wannabe satanic bands….

BTTG – Is there any other relevant piece of information you would like to refer to?

Christian – We had some changes in the band and our new vocalist is Alex and our new drummer Thomas and expect a new killer album!!!

BTTG – Your writing torture has come to an end. Feel free to leave a final message and long live DM!

Christian – Thanks a lot for the interview and the chance to introduce our band to the Portuguese Metal heads! Take a look at www.disinfect.de
