Quite a surprising
element in the Italian musical scene, PERFIDY BIBLICAL have so far released
some of the most interesting brutal Death Metal music I have heard of late.
Founder member Fabio kindly answered our questions, thus enlightening the
reader on a conceptual level. Italian Art raises its cup. BTTG – Mighty greetings to everybody in PERFIDY BIBLICAL. Would you
kindly start off by giving us a detailed account of all relevant events since
the band’s beginning and evolution through the ages?
BTTG – What is the current line-up and how stable is
it now? There are older members departing and new ones coming in, am I
correct? Fabio – Yep, you’re
right. The line-up of course has changed again during the last two years:
Stuart Franzoni became the new drummer and Mario Digiambattista is with us
for a bunch of months on the second guitar. Those who were involved from the
start are now out by their own decision, we’re focused with the new elements
in the making of something new. That’s all!
BTTG – You sometimes quote the band’s sound as
‘classic Death Metal’. What do you exactly mean by that? You have notorious
influences from bands such as MORBID ANGEL, HATE ETERNAL and Fabio – By classic
death metal I mean the music that comes from the BTTG – I can also hear traces of other styles in
your music. What music styles do you hear on a regular basis and which bands
have in your opinion defied the borders of Irreality? Fabio – When we write
down a riff or a song, we haven’t a sketch to follow. We’re driven by the
moment, with the intent to find out some particular arrangements, ya know.
Personally, I listen up to everything, my favourite are DARK ANGEL,
POSSESSED, MESSIAH, CELTIC FROST, HELLHAMMER, MARDUK, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS
PRIEST, MOTLEY CRUE, WHITESNAKE and POISON – basically stuff of the Eighties,
even rock, pop and dark, some fusion like UZEB, all the death metal from the
United States till the first half of the Nineties, techno, classical, ethnic
and folk music too. BTTG – Born
was recorded at
Fabio – It was a cool
experience to work with Christian Ice again, I have known him for more or
less ten years. He already knew the result we were looking for, I asked him
for some brutal and loud guitars, and he did the job well, but we’re gonna record
and mix the next album at our studio. This time we need calm and not haste,
‘cause we wanna be sure of all our possibilities, in a few words, it must be
a frightening work. BTTG – What would you point out as paradigms of
‘Perfidy’ and ‘Biblical’? Draw me a metaphorical painting for your concept of
the band’s name. Fabio - It’s not very
simple to explain that, bit I’ll try for you. The monicker is a concept about
blasphemy, sheer swear absolutely. You should know I blaspheme too much, so I
thought to use about those two particular terms together. The first one as
«perfidy» means huge wrath, immense evil, but that’s okay and too easy to
understand I guess. If you move it near the word biblical it means, that all
is malign and everlasting under a Satanic control stronger than everything.
The word «biblical» means something related to religion, and on a closer look
what I mean to say is that Catholicism is malefic and that’s the blasphemy!
The scriptures show you a god with his son made flesh to redeem the world –
crap! Only bullshit to me, every religion preaches evil when someone tells
you how to behave! BTTG – The visual concept is quite meaningful in Born. How do you articulate the layout
with the contents of the lyrics? You mentioned the Ancient Ones, so we can
safely assume that the Necronomicon
and HP Lovecroft exert some influence over your imaginary. Which other major
sources of inspiration have brought you thus far in the world of literature?
As Italians, you must surely drink significantly (if not directly) from the
classical Culture embedded in your own country. Fabio – I don’t think
so. About the lay out, we needed something that went straight to the point
for the booklet, so I think the inlay, cover art and the background obey the
theme. Another mistake is made, about the concept of the lyrics. Necronomicon
and Lovecraft are completely different, because the first is an ancient book
that explains a sort of evil but tough creation as a legend. [The vital importance of a phrase such as
«and/or» - M] As for LOVECRAFT, his stories are only fancy, inspired by
something he didn’t know as well. I don’t read too shitty authors. I’m
inspired by myself if you want to know, and not by what comes from outside my
country. BTTG – What is the current state of affairs in the
Italian scene? It is generally believed that Fabio – Well, I can
reply it’s not my business what the others think my country and the way music
is usually written here. Some believe that Italians are brilliant in arts,
and so I consider music and monuments for example. Yes, we probably are. If
you listen to the way an American or a German works the music, it is
completely different from how we make it. The best classical is ours, Opera
is sung in our tongue and generally music speaks Italian because we created
this language for music first. We give hell when we perform music, we’re special
in everything we do, and no one comes close to us. Just listen to Hour Of Penance and Ghouls to understand what I mean! BTTG – Are there side projects? What experience in
past projects do the band members have? Fabio – No side
projects at all, I don’t have any. Stuart also plays with some other death
metal bands such as SEMEION and CORPSEFUCKING ART; then Mario plays keyboards
in a band called ENDAEMONA, something about MOONSPELL, I think. As for
myself, I played in a lot of death metal oufits, but now I’m in PERFIDY
BIBLICAL only. BTTG – What can the regular metalhead (or the
ordinary mortal man) expect from a PB concert? Fabio – I guess we
give all we have during our live shows! It’s very important, because the fans
expect something, and we must give it! Our gigs are fucking intense and too
loud for the freaks! BTTG – Given the fact tat Born has been release a while now. What have the reactions been
like so far and where does it stand in relation to the previous release?
BTTG – Also, how embryonic is the next album by now?
Can we expect something for the beginning of 2005? Which studio will you be
recording at during New Year’s celebrations? Fabio – It’s the first
time I tell it to the press, but I’ll give you the news that it will be
called Decorations Of Pantheon and
that it won’t be released before one year I suppose. So expect only the best from
us, something different from what we have ever made, but always brutal death
metal for sure! BTTG – Now for a bit of history. In which (devious)
ways do you see a reflection of the Classical Culture in today’s Fabio – Nowadays, in BTTG – As with any other broadly speaking ‘Latin’
country, religion has always been heavily favoured in History and gave way to
Inquisition. In Fabio – As for
politics, religion here is very followed. I don’t find anything of interest
in it. I prefer caring about my own self, and my interests. I do some Yoga
practice, philosophy and sex – those are only some of the important parts of
my life. I find my way lonely, what surrounds me doesn’t interest me so much,
only in some aspects. I have a material and a spiritual level, like everyone:
on the one side I’m part of the universe as a cosmic being, on the other
there are some hobbies I can’t do without. Videogames, Play Station 2, ales
and collections, I like everything that entertains me as well. I avoid stupid
religions, I take something here and there, I want to be informed about
everything, but only to stick me up! BTTG – Our interview has come to an end. Please take
your time to leave a final message. Fabio – I hope you can
really organize the Back From The Grave Death Metal Festival for the next
summer in www.perfidybiblical.com
